Words of Wisdom...
Here are some words of wisdom from CSCO members who have lots of experience as School Chaplains. So you want to be a chaplain ...
"I started to prepare for chaplaincy over 20 years ago. I began as a teacher, knowing in my heart that what I really desired was chaplaincy. I began a spiritual reading program with a spiritual advisor, immersed myself in community and service projects and began my chaplaincy hope chest; a collection of special cloths and symbols to create a sacred space and to use in rituals and liturgies. I also attended as many religious education conferences and retreats that I was able to manage - I had such a strong desire to nurture my spiritual life! I also accepted opportunities to share my faith life with those around me and eventually I was invited to develop and facilitate retreats. When the time was right with my family, I went back to University to get my Masters in Religious Education. My journey with God has led me to this time and place - I love what I do!"
"Let flexibility be your middle name"
"The qualifications are the most important"
"When I first became a Chaplaincy Leader, the priest with whom I was working said, "Most of all, you must love them". That has always stayed with me. So in addition to (or perhaps more importantly than) education and formation, I would say that the person considering this profession (or better, this vocation) should love being with and working with youth, and be pastoral. Our young (and our not so young colleagues) simply need to be heard. That's is what I find most humbling and most gratifying in my role - the opportunity to listen and be a presence for both staff and students."
"It does not matter whether we are introverts or extroverts, Martha's or Mary's. We are all on different parts of our journey, including the chaplain. What we can do is accompany our schools on this journey, bringing our own unique gifts."
